If there's oil in it, and the light's on, two possible problems come to mind:
1. Bad oil pressure sensor, or bad wire from sensor to computer. Probably not too difficult or expensive to fix. This is what you hope for, because oil pressure could be OK.
2. Bad oil pump. Probably a PITA to get at and fix. Without oil pressure, no lube gets to important parts of the engine, leading to engine seizure. If that's what is happening, you're probably already screwed.
The stalling is not a good sign.
----
Edit: A couple other possibilities occurred to me, could also be a clogged oil filter or oil pickup. Oil filter is the easiest fix of all, obviously. If you're really lucky, you haven't damaged the engine too badly.
A clogged pickup typically requires removing the oil pan. In some cars this is easy, in others more involved. No idea on a Volvo. On my Neon, I had to remove the transmission bracket and front motor mount to get the pan off......Car stalls when '; no oil stop engine light appears?
I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU GET YOUR VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED TO FIND OUT JUST WHAT THE PROBLEM IS FIRST SO THEN YOU WILL HAVE SOME IDEA WHAT IS WRONG AS WELL AS WHAT TO EXPECT.
TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR ANY CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE PERSONAL SERVICE THAT YOU WILL RECEIVE.
The light refers to oil PRESSURE, not the presence of oil. Oil pressure is generated by an oil pump, which supplies oil to the bearings inside the engine.
The oil pressure switch also turns on the fuel pump on many cars, and that might be why it has quit running. I don't have a volvo, so take that with a grain of salt.
In short, it's time to get a real mechanic on this.
there could be multiple problems but it sounds like an oil pressure sensor cuasing the car to shut down, becuase the sensors telling the computer to shut down before it has major problems
You need to you this system where it scanns your cars computer for any bulletins in it and if it finds any erase the bulletin and it should fix the problem but the machine costs 150.00 but you can just take it to a mechanic.
Im not a Volvo expert, but I would think that the light is controlled by an oil level sensor in the pan like many G.M.s have. The ones on G.M.s are strictly a warning feature and will not cause shutdown. I don';t know if the same can be said for Volvos. Do you have an oil pressure light that comes on with the ignition key? If so, and that goes out and stays out with the engine running, your oil pressure id probably o.k. If you call a Volvo dealer or specialist, I'm sure they could advise you.
could be the computer chip that synchronizes everything. go to the place you bought it plus you may have a lemon law in your state so you can try and return it
