On the back of the burner is some kind of overflow. There is a valve with a copper pipe coming off of it. There is water coming out of it. What is my next step?I have a burnham rs-109 oil burner. Its leaking. How do I stop it?
The valve you are looking at is a T %26amp; P valve (Temperature and pressure.) It is designed to keep the pressure from building up inside the boiler to the point where it may cause danger or damage.
If it is a steam boiler this may be a serious condition that must be corrected immediately by a professional. More likely it is a hot water boiler and there are generally two equipment failure causes, before you might consider something more serious.
Has the fill valve (possibly looks like a bell, may be red, on the incoming water feed line,) been left in the bypass position? Normally, this valve regulates the incoming pressure to around 15 psi. This should be substantially below the rest of the house (around 40 psi. ) If the bypass were left on the the boiler is reaching the line pressure and the T%26amp;P is usually set to pop at around 30psi. - Turn off the by pass. This is sometimes a lever over the top of the bell that can turn 90 deg to go from a Verticale to horizontal position.
The fill valve may be bad and needs to be replaced.
