We don't buy very much oil from the Middle East. The 3 biggest countries that we import from are Canada, Mexico, and Venezuela, and they make up about 75% or so of our imports.

NO, the price would remain the same because demand and supply would remain the same. the only way to reduce the cost of oil is to reduce the demand by using alternate fuels or cutting consumption. that is not going to happen in the near future, so get used to the high price of gasoline. You are asking the wrong question. The reason oil prices are so high is because of monopoly. And monopolies can only function with the help of government.
To lower oil prices, we need to return to the Free Market. This means abolishing the unconstitutional Department of Energy. Free countries do not have an ';energy policy';. The REAL purpose of the ';energy policy'; is to ensure maximum profits for the big oil companies. Our politicians are being subsidized by big oil, and big oil takes care of them when they retire, or get voted out of office.
The Environmental Movement is financed by the big oil companies. It's purpose is to stop oil exploration and exploitation, thereby stifling competition, and creating an artificial ';shortage';.
The solution is to get government out of the way, and have real competition in energy production. As long as politicians are subsidized by big oil, corrupt courts side with the Environmentalists, and mainstream media continue to provide reasons why we can't drill for oil, we can expect to see prices for oil rise.
Incidentally, many of our politicians, top executives in the big oil companies, executives in major media, and high officials in the judiciary all belong to the same club. Why don't we just stop buying Iranian and Venezuelan oil?
Because worldwide oil distribution is a complex, tangled, 40 year old matrix and would wreak havoc throughout every country. Not that I would mind.Why don't we just stop buying Iranian and Venezuelan oil?
The solution is not that simple. Until we seriously pursue alternative fuel sources and actually make some headway on resource conservation, we are held hostage by whoever is willing to sell us oil. There are too many in our country that because of where they live in relation to their employment, don't truly have an adequate opportunity to reduce their consumption. Realistic expansion of work at home or significant improvements in public transportation can make a difference but those options have their own limitations in certain areas and fields. Gasoline has gone up in my area by roughly 22% in less than one month. If we simply stop buying oil from Venezuela and Iran or OPEC, I cannot imagine the increase we would see at the pump. If you don't use much gas now, you may not recognize or care that many are in situations where their consumption is not optional. You might not quickly be hurt personally from a significant cost increase but many would. Everyone would eventually suffer because of the impact on food prices and the cost of consumer goods. We need to capitalize on our available domestic resources while avidly pursuing oil's replacement in our economy or we are screwed. The U.S. doesn't buy oil. Oil companies buy it and import it and sell it, and they buy it on the world market from commodoties holders not from an individual country necessarily.
And because there is plenty of worldwide demand for oil, if we don't buy oil that originates in certain countries there are buyers lined up around the block to buy it.
We still have to buy it from somewhere and it won't effect Market Prices. What we need to do in the US is boycott ONE of the big oil conglomerates. I saw a chain letter that totally made total sense.

The only way to interrupt would be to blockade both countries. (That did not work with Iraq while Saddam was there.)

The only way to really bring down the price of oil permanently is by creating a viable substitute. Increasing production, opening up new refineries, going after oil speculators, improving relationships with oil rich countries will only help in the short term. The reality is that as population increases, and as countries continue to develop the need for energy will increase along with the demand for oil.
Governments need to take the lead and promote innovation to improve and create technologies that can power us into the future. I believe that government can give away grants, funding, and incentives to push for the development of technologies. Many argue that we need to shift to nuclear energy but the only problem with that is the nuclear energy is not an universally accepted option due to the negative stigma associated with it and the fact that nuclear waste is hard to transport, store.

We have plenty of oil here in North America, the reserves are being sold to China to raise the price. The oil companies refuse to build any new refineries with their record profits and gouging. The Iraq oil is being pipe-lined to Israel too, this is under HUGE scrutiny bud, as everyone in North America is paying the difference. I live in Canada too by the way, and have duel citizenship. If it would solve our long-term oil crisis, yes. The problem is that it won't. Look at ANWR - The U.S. Geological Survey estimates there are 3.2 billion barrels of oil there. This sounds like a lot, but we Americans are currently consuming 7.1 billion barrels a year. At best, ANWR would provide a six-month supply of oil. ANWR is not even remotely a solution for our energy problems.
Oil is a drug, and we Americans are addicts. We represent 4 percent of the world鈥檚 population, yet we consume 25 percent of the world鈥檚 oil production. In 1975 we imported 35 percent of our oil; we now purchase 54 percent from abroad, and unless we change our behavior, we will import 70 percent of our oil by 2025.
The only solution to our energy problems is conservation. There is much we could do to reduce our dependence on oil. Increasing average fuel efficiency to 39 miles a gallon, something we have the ability to do now, would save 51 billion barrels of oil over the next 50 years. This is 15 times more oil than we could get from ANWR. Our current fuel-efficiency standards are 25 years old and were written before we evolved into a nation of SUV drivers. This administration has created loopholes exempting vehicles weighing more than 8,500 pounds (such as the Hummer H2) from any fuel-efficiency standards whatsoever, and efforts to fund solar- and wind-energy programs have been repeatedly rejected.

The diesel motor, because of its incredible compression, will run perfectly well on vegetable oil. In colder climates, you might need to use petrodiesel to get started and warm up the engine (and the vegetable oil tank), but in most of the US it would work fabulously if the supply chain weren't as spotty as it is.

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with a 5.2 liter V8. It has 167,000 miles on it. My rear main seal is leaking a little. No oil had touched the drive way but you can see that oil is slowly but surely leaking out around the seal. I can either get it repaired this week or try Bars leak rear main seal repair. I dont mind going the cheap route but I dont want to end up with more problems than I already have. For one thing, the U.S. produces very few physical products anymore. The U.S. economy is service rather than product based.

They spend the money and keeps some in the bank. most are actaully not very bright when it comes to dealing with the economy.

Prices are a mechanism to control a scarce resource. We think the oil companies make large profits and they do. However, much of the money comes back into the economy via different ways. They spend the money and keeps some in the bank. most are actaully not very bright when it comes to dealing with the economy.
The goverment is making all the money. Oil companies keep 10 cents on the gallon.
Fact is petroleum is getting scarcer. There is nowhere for prices to go but up, over the next decade or so. The USA and Australia still have relatively cheap fuel by world standards. Even at US$5.00 per US gallon it would be cheaper than many European prices now.

It also sounds like you need to run an electrical diagnostic that you can get at any auto shop (it should cost $60-100). That should let you know or rule out any electrical problem versus a mechanical problem. It's all about process of elimination.

The pollutants formed from imperfectly converting hydrocarbon mass to energy in millions of cars everyday kill hundreds of young, old and sick people each year. Some days are so bad in major metropolitan areas, city governments are forced to broadcast smog alerts, warning their residents to avoid breathing the air anymore than is absolutely necessary.

'US economic domination' has been dead for years. Whilst the US economy is crumbles China grows ever stronger %26amp; the European Union continue to retain the 1# spot comfortably. The United States will eventually recover from this massive downturn, but it will have to settle for a distant 3rd place, not helped by the $12 trillion national debt.
Our domination was already in question. Our economy is no longer one that produces anything, we just shuffle money around until the bubble bursts. All our manufacturing is out sourced. Once the world decides to no longer finance our debt it is all over with.

How can one member of congress, Nancy Palosi, stop all chances of oil being drilled for. How does the House Majority Leader have the power to hold up all voting on oil drilling. As far as I remember they are there to keep order and guide regular procedures. Nancy Pelosi is just prohibiting the drilling of oil in our national parks and heavy tourist destinations. Allowing oil to be drilled in our national parks totally defeats the purpose of having national parks. The tourism dollars generated by certain coastal areas is much greater than any economic boost from oil being drilled. She has greater power than the president in terms of shutting down a bill because she is Speaker of the House, and Congress is where bills are created. The president's power lies in enforcing laws, not creating and passing them.
Pelosi's refusal to allow debate and voting on new leases and drilling proposals is a disgrace. This is what happens when you elect Democrats. They claim to be for the little guy until the little guy shows up, and then they step on the little guy because he is so, well, little. John McCain has good ideas to jumpstart American energy production. Let's get someone in the White House who will punch Nancy Pelosi's lights out. With Democrats in control of both Congress and the White House, energy prices will skyrocket in the coming years. That is what they want. It is our job to prevent it from happening.

just a thought is it a hot engine light or oil light, cause sometimes they are combined and when you stop your engine isnt getting cooled by outside air. asimple check to see is put your heater on high and stop at a light or just stop if the light dont come on it could be your thermostat or water pump. if its not that get it put on a machine to see if it is more serious
I almost bought one awhile back...Did you check it out yourself or are you just going by what they tell you?? I would check the dipstick myself.. Also make sure from a professional, that the correct dipstick is in this engine. There has been cases where a wrong dipstick was used and gave a false reading.

I think one of the hidden reasons why we still cling on to oil is because of the value of our dollar. Now that we are off the gold standard, what do we have to back the falling dollar? The two main commodities that are priced in US dollars are gold and OIL. If the Iranians get their wish and oil was priced in Euros, that would severely damage the strength of the dollar. That is one of the reasons why we desperately cling onto oil.
However, as much as I want to get off of oil, flex fuels are not a panacea either. The problem is that it takes things we already need in order to convert that to fuel. We don't have enough farmland to produce corn or any other crops to be used to make flex fuels, at least enough to satisfy our energy needs. Secondly, these are crops that we use as either food stuffs or to feed cattle. That would jack the prices of just about all food up. Also, oil has an efficient delivery system. These bio fuels don't have the infrastructure to transport these fuels efficiently and cost effectively.

I was honestly shocked to learn that Conoco Philips and Exxon Mobile refused to bow to Chavezs nutty demands and have begun a pull out of what amounts to 15 billion dollars in investments. Now I feel a little less pissed as I pump. Can you imagine how bad Chavez must be that our own oil cartel wont do buisness with him. Incredible. I say the development of oil independent technology has to be driven by consumer demand. I will tell you this. I am in the market for a new cart and have already decided I will not accept less that 30 MPG fuel eficiency. This is triple what I get in my pickup. I still need the truck for work and horses but I will drive the car whenever I can. Any recommendations?

Oil companies are there to give a product and make money. If there was no demand than the prices wouldnt be so high. Whether big or small oil companies, the prices will always be big. And it dousnt help that the dollar is declining.

Instead of jumping on Oil Corps, lets invest in new refineries and expand oil exploration. (increase supply)

the speculative prices are a cause of concern, but thats not really what the issue is.
It has to do with supply and demand....we have to demonstrate the intestinal fortitude as a populace to enact change on our own accord for quite some time now, mostly by design (why do you think so many influential groups divide the populace?)
If we the people actually cut our consumption of oil by 5%, you would be shocked at the reaction from oil companies and our government. Our government knows that as a populace its very hard to mobilize a boycott of any large degree.
And all of this uproar about OPEC is another example of how many of us would rather blame an entity and demand they change, rather than grouping together and truly producing change. Stop driving, heating/cooling, using plastics, etc. as much. Stop purchasing or supporting anything coming from OPEC nations and start using the the very real powers that our populace and market have.

I think you are asking the wrong question. you should ask, when is congress going to let the oil Co's drill for new oil and build new refinery's. if these are the problems why does congress keep stopping them? It is not against the law to make money no matter how ridicules the amount is. I don't really like the oil Co's but we'd have a very hard time without them and I like congress less. You want Congress to stop Big Oil, they are already doing that. Here are 10 reason for high gas price, mostly because of Congress.
1) Congress will not allow Big Oil to add more drilling platforms in the Gulf. Meanwhile countries, like China, are signing 100 year leases on new areas in the Gulf.
2) Congress will not pull back on Reg's on refineries. That's the reason why Big Oil has to shut down refineries is because of the increase reg's. This is also why Big Oil has not built a new refinery in the US in over 30 years. They are too busy trying to keep the current ones open.
3) Congress will not allow Big Oil to drill in Alaska. Thanks to the environmentalists. But the new drills are alot more cleaner than they were 40 years ago when when they started to grill in the North Slope.
4) Congress will not allow Big Oil to Drill off of the NC/SC or California.
5) Congress just past legislation to sue OPEC. So what do you thing OPEC will do, retaliate? Yes, Big Oil has to purchase oil from OPEC and if OPEC retaliate that the price will go up even more.
6) Congress will not, at least during the summer months, repeal the Federal tax on Oil/Gas.
7) Congress mandates that Big Oil must add different types of additives to gas. (each additive cost something).
8) When new oil is found, the environmentalists prevent the drilling by holding Big Oil in court. We have oil to tap but the courts have them tied up. (thanks again Greenies)
9) And do not forget about the dollar. The US Dollar currently weak against other forgein currencies. And since the price of oil is based in guess what. . US Dollar, the price will remain high.
10) There is only so much oil on the planet Earth. Back during the 50's-70's gas as cheap (under $1/gallon). Why? There were Trillions of gallons of oil in the ground with very little demand. Now that demand is up, the current wells are almost tapped out, unless additional wells are drilled.

We have probably passed the ';hump'; in world oil production just recently (sometimes called ';Hubbert's Peak';). But there will still be oil for a while.
The problem is, that with more countries becoming developed (China, India, Brazil, Russia) and requiring more oil, and with the continual increase in oil demands by developed countries, the pressure on oil will become greater just as it starts to run out. If we don't have alternative technologies developed by then, we may be in for a pretty hard landing.
i am not concerned with thier buissenss but at least oil producing countries feel secure and iraq will get freedom from america
