If we know burning oil is bad for our enviroment, shouldn't we stop using it?

Why are we begging for more gas and lower prices on a item we shouldn't be abusing?

Also does anyone know what happened to the electric car?If we know burning oil is bad for our enviroment, shouldn't we stop using it?
Unfortunately we have become a society that is geared more towards personal gain or prestige. Car manufacturers tell us through advertising that if we drive ';this car'; we will be seen as succesful, discerning, more sexy, etc. It has become ';uncool'; to be seen on the city bus, not to mention the inconvenience of having to wait or walk a little ways.

Couple this with the fact that the people running the oil companies stand to lose a great deal of money if we start using alternative fuels, and the fact that , quite frankly, there are those who simply don't give a ---- about anything but their own realities, and you get a society encouraged to consume, consume, consume.

The fact is that alternative fuels are readily available and have been for many years. We are told they are too expensive to be practical for mass consumption, or that it would take years of development before they could be utilised.

Call me jaded, but I believe that society in general, has the mind set that ';If it's too hard....Why bother?';If we know burning oil is bad for our enviroment, shouldn't we stop using it?
We can't stop using oil because no one has developed another power source that performs the same. Electric cars are fine for flat, urban areas, but they won't go long distances, they can't pull heavy loads (no electric tractor-trailers!), and they are no good on hills. What we need is a reliable, high-power-capable, alternate fuel source. Go to school, learn all you can, and invent one!
