The oil companies can drill right now but they prefer not to. They have no incentive because they are doing fabulously well with high prices. Did you see their latest quarterly earnings reports?
What the oil companies want is more public land to stockpile with the millions of acres of land that they already have under their control and while the Republicans will give them anything they want, the Democrats are resisting on common sense grounds.Why won't the Democrats stop playing politics and let us drill for oil now?
Because even if the oil companies didn't have millions of untapped acres already and even if they would pledge to sell the oil they drill in the US, and even if there was no way that another huge environmental disaster like the Valdez spill could happen and even if oil were not a finite resource that we need to think about getting off of anyway and even if every Republican in office above dogcatcher is in the pockets of the oil lobby and even if John McCain was against drilling before he was for it-
Even if all of that was not the case, if you sink drills today, the impact on gas prices will be as follows:
Somewhere between 2020 and 2030, you will pay a whopping 20 cents less per gallon.
Remember, everyone, this is the guy who is still trying to talk up the Gas Tax Holiday, which will save you like 5 cents a gallon and remove a lot of infrastructure.
Both proposals are similar in that they appear to be doing something, but in reality don't help nearly as much as they will hurt.
Big Oil ALREADY has 1000's of land leases to drill their little hearts out. Are they drilling? No. Would they start drilling if they were given 1000 more leases? No. Supply and demand, my friend. Flood the market with oil and the price goes down and they may go from 11 billion profit a quarter to 9 billion. Don't be fooled by election year Repug cries for more drilling, soothing the worries of the mis-informed and ignorant. Which are you? Both?
Not only the democrats but the Republicans also. Each had their turn to do something.I don't know what all the fuss is about. their has been drilling in Louisiana for years and it is known as the sportsman's paradise. I lived their all my life and all sorts of animal and plant life thrive their. The argument about endanger species etc do not hold water. As for oil spills we have had our share and guess what it always comes back to where it was before. Nancy Pelosi and the dems are totally wrong, I agree that we need alternatives but until then lets use what we have. Bring down the futures market by allowing the drilling and then lets go with the oil man T-bone Pickens he wants to make money in the future he has the right ideas. If we don't drill offshore the Chinese are planning to drill in international waters off our coast. Then we will have to give more of our money to the Chinese for their oil.
Wait a second you dimwit. If it was so gall dang important why didn't Bush try to get this done when all his republican lackeys had a majority in Congress from 2000 to 2006? Easy answer, because it s really not that important, except of course when you're trying to convince morons to vote for another 4 years for a morally bankrupt party, with no plan and no vision.

2 reasons:
1. It won't do a damned bit of good for at least 10 years. Even Bush, McSame, Big Oil, and pretty much everyone on the right will admit this when pressed.
2. Big Oil are currently sitting on 68,000,000 acres of Federal oil leases that they refuse to exploit now. Why give them a bigger piece of the National Pie to squat on??
The answer is simple, because drilling for oil will not make an immediate impact on the the daily lives of average Americans. Take ANWR for an example. Even if we did drill there, the country doesn't have the refining capacity to turn it into oil. On top of that, according to the experts that I have seen on t.v. and have heard on various CONSERVATIVE radio talk shows, it would only impact by a few cents anyway. The republicans are trying to use this as a wedge issue because they know that the average American voter is ignorant and will believe just about anything they're told to believe, ergo the so called war on terror
Consider this one way to resolve the oil situation is an army demolition team at every major commercial airport in The U.S.A. After draining the jet fuel out of jets they army can then blow up the airports and end the problem once and for all. Other means hiring auto thieves to help bring cars to chop shops. This reminds a person of a film called The City which Ate Cars.
We should make cars that run on air or water. No more oil drilling. It's polluting the air and water and everything else~ If the north pole and the south pole melted, 1/3 or the earth will be under water, and you want to drill on north pole? That's insane!
These Democrats are OWNED by the far-left environmentalist lobbies, and they WILL NOT allow any progress to be made on this issue. Why? Because their goal is to destroy our economy, and have us all riding around on solar-powered skateboards.
The Democrats are not listening to any one about oil solutions. They been sleeping since they got control of congress. We have to show them how much we appreciate their promises and vote them out. They just say and don't do.
Nobody is stopping you from drilling. Big Oil has hundreds of thousands of acres under lease... they don't want to increase their drilling and refining.

Because the idea that drilling for oil is a solution is just a political ploy. No evidence supports the claim.
Because they have to cater to enviromentalist that won't allow the companies to drill becasue they fear another oil spill.
