My apartment has oil heating. There is always a black film/goo on everything. Is there anyway to stop it?

I'm just afraid about what it could be doing to my lungs if it is from the heating system. My apartment has oil heating. There is always a black film/goo on everything. Is there anyway to stop it?
It could be caused by the heating system. The burners

and the exhaust should be isolated from the apartment air,

but sometimes they leak.

You could talk with the other tenants, and see if it is

worthwhile to take this up with the building owner or

manager, and see if it is in environmental compliance.

You could place filters in your vents, and ask the home

improvement store for the best material for that purpose,

but one way is to place a thin, breathable fabric over

the vents. Not too thick, or you will block too much heat.

I don't know how much oil is in the air, a little oil would

pass inspection. You could seek assistance from a

local renters rights association, or you could consider

moving.
